Blogging circle is the older term to describe virtual communities built around members' shared blogs. These can include other community tools like forums (bulletin boards), calendars, email, shared photo and video and music galleries, wikis, and widgets. They can be hosted by a company and used in house, or offered for public use ( like Ning). They can be open source software that the user brands and serves. Several interesting open source alternatives are being developed in (the computer language) Ruby (on Rails).
